MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS:  Estudo retrospectivo para reavaliação de amostras de soro de pacientes dialisados, utilizando testes sorológicos para a detecção do HCV (anti-HCV e Ag-Ab HCV) e HCV-RNA, por meio de técnica molecular de RT-PCR.  RESULTADOS:  Foram incluídos 115 pacientes dialisados com amostras de soro coletadas no período do estudo. A análise dessas amostras mostrou prevalência de 16,5% de anti-HCV reagente, entre as quais 4,3% apresentaram indicador de replicação viral ativa (HCV-RNA reagente). Detectou-se taxa de soroconversão em 55,2% dos pacientes no período analisado. O grupo anti-HCV, Ag-Ab HCV e HCV-RNA reagente foi o mais prevalente (41,7%). Em relação às amostras anti-HCV não reagentes, verificou-se replicação viral com HCV-RNA reagente em 22,7%. Foram detectados os genótipos 1 e 3. O genótipo 1 foi prevalente em 73,0% das amostras.  CONCLUSÃO:  Quando se introduziu a triagem laboratorial para HCV (anti-HCV) na clínica de diálise, foi possível observar: alta prevalência de infecção pelo HCV entre os pacientes em tratamento; altos índices de soroconversão; equiparação entre resultados sorológicos, utilizando os métodos de ELISA de segunda e de terceira geração; presença de replicação viral entre os pacientes anti-HCV não reagentes; e maior prevalência do genótipo 1 do HCV.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  OBJECTIVE:  To describe aspects of laboratory serological and molecular diagnosis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients undergoing treatment at a dialysis clinic in Belém, Pará State, Brazil, from 1990 to 1993.  MATERIALS AND METHODS:  Retrospective study for reassessment of serum samples from dialysed patients using serological tests for the detection of HCV (anti-HCV and Ag-Ab HCV) and HCV-RNA by molecular RT-PCR.  RESULTS:  A total of 115 dialysed patients with serum samples collected during the study period were included. Analysis of these samples showed a 16.5% prevalence of anti-HCV reagent, among which 4.3% showed an indicator of active viral replication (HCV-RNA reagent). Seroconversion rate was detected in 55.2% of patients in the analyzed period. The anti-HCV group, Ag-Ab HCV and HCV-RNA reagent were the most prevalent (41.7%). For non-reactive anti-HCV samples, viral replication with HCV-RNA reagent was 22.7%. Genotypes 1 and 3 were detected. Genotype 1 was prevalent in 73.0% of the samples. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN  OBJETIVO: Describir aspectos del diagnóstico de laboratorio serológico y molecular de la infección por el virus de la hepatitis C (VHC - en inglés hepatitis C virus), en pacientes sometidos a tratamiento en una clínica de diálisis de Belém, estado de Pará, Brasil, en el período de 1990 a 1993.  MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio retrospectivo para reevaluación de muestras de suero de pacientes dializados, utilizando pruebas serológicos para la detección del VHC (anti-VHC y Ag-Ab VHC) y VHC-ARN, por la técnica molecular de RT-PCR.  RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 115 pacientes dializados con muestras de suero recolectadas en el período del estudio. El análisis de esas muestras presentó prevalencia de 16,5% de anti-VHC reactivo, entre las cuales un 4,3% presentaron indicador de replicación viral activa (VHC-ARN reactivo). Se detectó una tasa de seroconversión en 55,2% de los pacientes en el período analizado. El grupo anti-VHC, Ag-Ab VHC y VHC-ARN reactivo fue el más prevalente (41,7%). En relación a las muestras anti-VHC no reactivas, se verificó replicación viral con VHC-ARN reactivo en 22,7%. Fueron detectados los genotipos 1 y 3. El genotipo 1 fue prevalente en 73,0% de las muestras.  CONCLUSIÓN: Cuando se introdujo la selección de laboratorio para VHC (anti-VHC) en la clínica de diálisis, fue posible observar: alta prevalencia de infección por VHC entre los pacientes en tratamiento; altos índices de seroconversión; equiparación entre resultados serológicos, utilizando los métodos de ELISA de segunda y tercera generación; presencia de replicación viral entre los pacientes anti-VHC no reactivos; y mayor prevalencia del genotipo 1 de VHC.]]></p></abstract>
