Additionally, it causes significant economic impacts as an enteropathogen among domestic animals. This report presents clinical and diagnostic findings in two cases of rotavirus (RV) infection involving orphaned Leopardus tigrinus (Schreber, 1775) and Leopardus pardalis (Linnaeus, 1758), representing the first registered group A RV (RVA) infection in these species. Both felids were rescued in Pará State, Amazon Region, by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources and treated in an intensive care ward in a public Environmental Park of Belém City. After adaptation up to the 40th day of the quarantine period, these animals had no typical symptoms of acute, fulminant gastroenteritis. The collected samples were examined at the Virology Laboratory of Instituto Evandro Chagas. RVA antigen was detected in the blood and fecal samples of L. tigrinus by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunochromatography. RVA-positive samples were subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for VP4 and VP7 genes using conventional set primers but with negative results. Stools were examined for ova and parasites yielding negative results and for intestinal endoparasites, yielding negative results. The animals died within a few days following a clinical exacerbation, therefore unresponsive to treatment. Necropsies and histopathological analysis were performed at the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology of Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia. Despite the pathologic findings typical of RV infection hemorrhagic enteritis was unusual if presumed etiology is considered.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO Rotavírus (RV) são altamente infecciosos e transmitidos pela via fecal-oral. São uma das principais causas de mortes por diarreia em crianças de países em desenvolvimento e causam impactos econômicos significativos como enteropatógenos entre os animais domésticos. Este relato apresenta achados clínicos e diagnósticos em dois casos de infecção por rotavírus envolvendo Leopardus tigrinus (Schreber, 1775) e Leopardus pardalis (Linnaeus, 1758), representando a primeira infecção registrada por RV do grupo A (RVA) nessas espécies. Os felinos foram resgatados no estado do Pará pelo Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis e tratados em uma unidade de terapia intensiva em um parque ambiental público de Belém. Após adaptação, até o 40º dia do período de quarentena, esses animais não apresentaram sintomas típicos de gastroenterite aguda fulminante. As amostras coletadas foram examinadas no Laboratório de Virologia do Instituto Evandro Chagas. O antígeno RVA foi detectado em amostras de sangue e fezes de L. tigrinus por ensaio imunoenzimático e imunocromatografia. Amostras positivas para RVA foram submetidas à eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida e reação em cadeia da polimerase com transcriptase reversa para os genes VP4 e VP7, usando primers convencionais, porém com resultados negativos. As fezes foram examinadas para identificar ovos e parasitas e endoparasitas intestinais, com resultados negativos. Os animais morreram poucos dias após uma exacerbação clínica, logo não responsiva ao tratamento. As necropsias e análises histopatológicas foram realizadas no Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia. Apesar dos achados patológicos típicos da infecção por RV, a gastroenterite hemorrágica seria incomum se a etiologia presumida fosse reconhecida.]]></p></abstract>
