OBJETIVOS:  Avaliar o rendimento e a composição do óleo essencial de palmarosa (OEP) em duas estações do ano (outono e primavera), além de investigar sua atividade antimicrobiana contra cepas de Staphylococcus aureus.  MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS:  O estudo foi realizado na Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul, no município de Realeza, estado do Paraná, Brasil, no período de março a dezembro de 2022. O OEP foi extraído por destilação a vapor, e a composição química foi analisada por cromatografia em fase gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas. A atividade antimicrobiana foi avaliada por métodos de disco-difusão, concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) e concentração bactericida mínima (CBM).  RESULTADOS:  O OEP apresentou densidade de 0,88 g/mL e maior rendimento na primavera (4,73 mL/kg) em comparação com o outono (1,44 mL/kg). A análise química identificou oito componentes principais em ambas as estações, incluindo geraniol, acetato de geranila, linalol, cis-&#42933;-ocimeno, &#42933;-cariofileno e trans-&#42933;-ocimeno. Em relação à atividade antimicrobiana, o OEP demonstrou efeito inibitório significativo contra todas as cepas testadas de S. aureus e elevada atividade bactericida frente duas cepas.  CONCLUSÃO:  A primavera é a estação mais favorável para a obtenção do OEP em Realeza, devido ao maior rendimento e à presença de compostos ativos como geraniol e acetato de geranila. O OEP mostrou-se eficaz contra S. aureus, com potencial para ser utilizado como agente antimicrobiano natural.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Aromatic grasses of the genus Cymbopogon, particularly Cymbopogon martinii (palmarosa), are rich sources of essential oils containing geraniol and geranyl acetate, compounds known for their antimicrobial properties.  OBJECTIVES:  To evaluate the yield and chemical composition of palmarosa essential oil (PEO) in two seasons (autumn and spring) and to investigate its antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus strains.  MATERIALS AND METHODS:  The study was conducted at the Federal University of Fronteira Sul, in Realeza, Paraná State, Brazil, from March to December 2022. PEO was extracted by steam distillation, and its chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial activity was assessed using disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays.  RESULTS:  PEO exhibited a density of 0.88 g/mL and a higher yield in spring (4.73 mL/kg) compared with autumn (1.44 mL/kg). Chemical analysis identified eight major components in both seasons, including geraniol, geranyl acetate, linalool, cis-&#42933;-ocimene, &#42933;-caryophyllene, and trans-&#42933;-ocimene. Regarding antimicrobial activity, PEO exhibited significant inhibitory effects against all tested S. aureus strains and demonstrated strong bactericidal activity against two specific strains.  CONCLUSION:  Spring was the most favorable season for PEO production in Realeza, due to higher yield and the presence of active compounds such as geraniol and geranyl acetate. PEO proved effective against S. aureus, highlighting its potential as a natural antimicrobial agent.]]></p></abstract>
