Occupational chemical exposure is currently a relevant public health problem. This paper discusses the priority, usefulness and feasibility of public health surveillance as a tool to monitor the problem and guide the development of control measures. The use of public health surveillance in occupational hazards is discussed. To demonstrate the usefulness of toxicology laboratory data as potential sources of information to identify clusters of occupational exposure to toxic substances, data from a laboratory located in São Paulo is presented. Several features that suggest priority, usefulness and feasibility of a surveillance system like were identified; the development of actions to improve the laboratory practices in this area was discussed.
