Technical aspects of entomologic surveillance have long being used as a basic tool to administrate and implement vector control programs indicators. The conceptual framework and methodology of entomologic surveillance is reviewed in this paper and the concept of “intelligence” is introduced. A new operational structure that emphasizes the use of entomologic indicators to prevent and control arthropod-borne-diseases is presented. Special attention is given to the entomologic information system and the methods based on the biological characteristic of the vector and its close relationship to humans, animals and parasites are described. Stages to implement the Entomologic Surveillance in the municipalities are proposed and the importance of this tool in Public Health is discussed.
